Heroes Welcome Home is a curriculum that prepares REALTORS® to serve returning U.S. soldiers and their families by helping them address their housing needs. The program takes a comprehensive approach to educating REALTORS® and provides them with the tools and resources they need to effectively counsel veterans, including disabled veterans, on their real estate options.
The program is provided to members of the San Antonio Board of REALTORS®. The San Antonio Board of REALTORS® is the largest professional trade organization in San Antonio and represents more than 7,000 REALTOR® members.
SABOR is one of more than 1,600 local boards and 54 state and territory organizations of REALTORS® nationwide that make up the National Association of REALTORS®. Please visit SABOR.com for more information.
THE HISTORY OF HEROES WELCOME HOME
Heroes Welcome Home was designed to prepare REALTORS® to advise veterans on housing options, including their legal rights under the Americans with Disabilities and Fair Housing acts, home-lending programs, adapting homes to accommodate disabilities, and locating community rehabilitation and other veteran services. REALTORS® learn about the most common physical and cognitive injuries sustained by today's soldiers and details concerning the full range of issues affecting their ability to buy or rent homes.
The concept of Heroes Welcome Home for the real estate industry came about in July, 2009. It first was developed for a professional development program for Chicago REALTORS®. In August, 2009 it was submitted, as one of 225 concepts, to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) Game Changer Program with the knowledge that it could be adapted for any size REALTOR® Board or community.
In November, 2009, Heroes Welcome Home was awarded the NAR Game Changer Award, along with 12 other recipients. C.A.R. received funding to develop the curriculum, pursue civic partnerships and implement an education program for Chicago REALTORS®. The first strategy was to incorporate partnerships with various veteran organizations in order to obtain the expertise and information that would be necessary to produce a quality educational experience.
From research and statistical data we knew that the number of soldiers suffering disabilities from injuries during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars was in the tens of thousands. The research also indicated that the survival rate was greater than any other United States War in history due to the advances in medical technology; evacuation procedures, on-site medical personnel and advances in armor both body and vehicle.
Heroes Welcome Home hosted its first professional development program on May 25 & 26, 2010. The curriculum was taught by experts from the U.S. Dept. of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Army, John Marshall Law School Veterans Legal Support Center, Access Living of Chicago, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Senno Group Wellness & Rehabilitation, and Office of the Illinois Attorney General. The Wounded Warrior Project also supported the program, as did other Chicago area REALTOR® associations, including the Mainstreet Organization of REALTORS®, the North Shore-Barrington Association of REALTORS® and the REALTOR® Association of Northwest Chicagoland, and the C.A.R. Education Foundation.
The San Antonio Board of REALTORS® is proud to now offer this award winning program to San Antonio and its surrounding areas. April 2012 will be the first year for Heroes Welcome Home in San Antonio, but it will not be the last. SABOR looks forward to carrying on this rich and informative program for many years to come.
